BRAC started its operations in Sri Lanka in 2005 to help post-tsunami rehabilitation and livelihood recovery. We have been working with local communities to help individuals find work and build successful businesses. 

We started off with a range of immediate, practical and targeted rehabilitation activities:

  • Cleaning and disinfecting contaminated water wells
  • Constructing latrines within the temporary shelters
  • Providing medical aid for those who were severely injured during the tsunami
  • Replacing lost and damaged school materials for tsunami-affected school students
  • Providing a monthly stipend for a period of one year to support tsunami-affected students who have either lost one or both parents
  • Helping restart cultivation for those who lost their livelihoods and assets to the tsunami

Since late 2006, BRAC Sri Lanka has shifted its focus from tsunami rehabilitation to longer term support programmes:
