Announcing new appointments to the BRAC USA Board of Directors
A message from the President and CEO
I am delighted to announce the addition of two new members to the Board of Directors of BRAC USA: Crispin Murira and Raymond Offenheiser. Together, Mr. Murira and Mr. Offenheiser bring decades of experience in international development, social entrepreneurship, and executive management. Their leadership on the Board will be a great asset to our team, helping BRAC USA to further BRAC’s global mission to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice.
Crispin Murira currently leads Business Development and Replication at Kenya-based Copia Global, a technology company whose mission is to develop and execute e-commerce solutions for the bottom of the economic pyramid. Mr. Murira previously served as the founding CEO of Copia Global, which has since gained recognition as one of the most innovative and rapidly-growing companies in Kenya.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Mr. Murira moved to the US to attend university, where he earned a BA in Economics from Bowdoin College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He went on to hone his expertise in finance, marketing, and social entrepreneurship during his time in mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse and as the co-founder and lead for product development, sales, and marketing at Kipepeo LLC, a fashion accessories design, manufacturing, and wholesale company.
I am deeply impressed by Mr. Murira’s passion for leveraging innovative business and technology solutions to inspire meaningful change in the developing world. His wide breadth of experience, particularly in social entrepreneurship and technology, complements BRAC’s track record of innovative and business-based approaches to development. I am grateful that Mr. Murira’s insight and experience will benefit BRAC USA in its ongoing efforts to amplify BRAC’s important work, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
Raymond Offenheiser has spent his entire career in the nonprofit sector and brings more than four decades of experience in international development. Mr. Offenheiser is the director of the Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development (NDIGD) and serves as Distinguished Professor of the Practice at the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Offenheiser was formerly the president of Oxfam America for 20 years.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Offenheiser served as the representative of the Ford Foundation in Bangladesh, where he became intimately familiar with BRAC and observed its emergence as one of the largest and most innovative global nonprofits. He also served the Ford Foundation in the Andean and Southern Cone regions of South America, directed programs in Brazil and Colombia at the Inter-American Foundation, and worked for Save the Children in Mexico.
A recognized leader on issues such as poverty alleviation, human rights, and international development, Mr. Offenheiser’s deep knowledge of global development and the nonprofit sector will bring tremendous value to BRAC USA. I am especially pleased that his experience with BRAC in Bangladesh and deep knowledge of the history of the organization will be leveraged to enhance our work at BRAC USA.
The addition of these two unique leaders to our Board has great significance for BRAC USA and the entire BRAC family. Mr. Murira and Mr. Offenheiser will bring considerable insights from their diverse breadth of experiences and will be terrific additions to our team as we work to inspire hope, restore dignity, and bring large-scale change to millions of underserved people around the globe.
