Ghana

BRAC began its journey in Ghana in 2023. We launched our seventh microfinance entity, BRAC Ghana Savings and Loans Ltd. Its mission is to provide financial services to people who are excluded from mainstream banking services—especially women and youth living in poverty in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Ghana is a country of more than 35 million people. It was the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence from colonial rule. Today, it is one of the most stable democracies on the African continent. Yet, three out of five adults do not have access to formal financial services. People living in poverty, women, and those in rural areas are further excluded, facing additional barriers to borrow and save money and build sustainable livelihoods. We work with individuals to build financial resilience and help them unlock their entrepreneurial potential.

If women are given access to capital, if women are trained, if they are taught to keep proper records, I think we will move very far.”

Our work

Ghana

Ghana is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and cultural diversity, with more than 70 native ethnic groups. It is the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa, and agriculture is a vital part of the country’s economy.

Yet, 39% of people in Ghana live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $3 per day. Many struggle to access education and healthcare. The unemployment rate is high, especially among youth. With the right support and opportunities, individuals and communities across Ghana can forge a pathway out of poverty.
