Disaster preparation and response in Bangladesh

Preparing communities for crisis and ensuring dignity while responding

BRAC began with humanitarian response in 1972, supporting communities devastated by the cyclone and the Liberation War.

That legacy continues today through BRAC's Disaster Risk Management Program, which works to build resilience and deliver rapid, locally led support at scale when disaster strikes in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is one of the world’s most disaster-affected countries. In 2024 alone, BRAC responded to five major disasters in Bangladesh, including large-scale flooding, cyclones and extreme heat waves.

2024 flood response in Bangladesh

August 24, 2024: Dozens of people affected by flooding in Bangladesh look out from the rooftop of a multi-story building as rising floodwaters trap them from below and ominous skies linger above.
Naively, I asked [community members impacted by floods], ‘Aren’t you planning for the next flood?’ A woman’s response cut deep: ‘We don’t have the headspace to plan—we’re too busy fighting to survive.’ That moment hit hard. Those of us who have the space to think must act. We cannot shift the burden onto communities already on the brink.”
