Improving urban hygiene through smart, inclusive sanitation solutions in Bangladesh
Bhumijo Ltd. is a Bangladesh-based social enterprise providing smart, hygienic, and inclusive public sanitation solutions in high-traffic, low-income urban areas. Founded in 2017, through BRAC’s Urban Innovation Challenge, Bhumijo designs and operates affordable, sustainable toilet facilities that promote health, dignity, and accessibility for all.
For the over five million people who commute daily on the roads of Dhaka, there are fewer than 100 usable public restrooms—a serious gap that most affects low-income populations and women. Bhumijo addresses this urgent need by operating 43 modern sanitation centers serving more than 10,000 people every day, improving hygiene and quality of life across Bangladesh’s urban communities.

We are working to solve the public toilet crisis especially for women. With the support from others, this initiative can be scaled up at different places.”

During Covid-19, people were scared to use public toilets over the concerns of contamination and possibility of virus spread. Touchless Toilet was introduced to solve this problem.
