Shortly after sunset on Tuesday, November 25, a fast-moving fire broke out in Korail, one of Dhaka’s largest slums, home to 80,000 people. The fire has left thousands of people homeless.
BRAC announced an initial support package of BDT 5 million ($41,000) for the families impacted by the disaster.
"Korail slum is home to different people from across the country—seasonal workers seeking income opportunities, families displaced by climate disasters, and low-income laborers striving to survive in the city," said Dr Md Liakath Ali, BRAC's Director of Risk Management. "Many have lost all their possessions, including money, food, clothing, and essential household items. While the death toll has not yet been confirmed, numerous individuals have been injured and are receiving medical care.
"Several community schools, NGO-run education centres, and health clinics also suffered damage. Among those affected are large numbers of children, older people, and pregnant women. The loss of housing has increased their vulnerability, especially as day-time shelter options remain extremely limited.
"Despite their resilience, families now urgently need support to rebuild their lives. BRAC is providing cash assistance to affected households, ensuring that each family can address its most immediate and unique needs. We urge everyone to provide any support they can to help the effected people in rebuild their lives’’
BRAC stand beside the community, committed to supporting them through every step of rebuilding and recovery.
